What Drainage Issues Do We Sort Out in Southampton?

Most calls start the same way: the same drain that keeps backing up every few weeks, an outside gully overflowing across the yard, or a foul smell that won’t shift. Behind those we also clear surcharging manholes, slow sinks and baths, and toilets that won’t flush away.

The recurring ones are rarely bad luck. In the older clay-drained terraces of Shirley and St Denys it’s usually root ingress or a joint that’s dropped; on the pitch-fibre estates at Millbrook and Thornhill it’s pipe that’s gone oval. We work on those terraces and student lets, and on restaurants, shops and commercial sites across the city.

When it’s more than a one-off blockage, we survey the line first, then quote the right fix.

A recent job: a filling-station forecourt backing up into a blocked interceptor

A filling-station forecourt out on the western edge of the area we cover, toward the New Forest, had its external drains backing up across the yard. We traced the run to an interceptor, a Buchan trap, packed solid with silt and forecourt debris and standing full of water, which was holding everything up behind it.

We cleared the chamber and jetted the line until it ran freely again. A forecourt interceptor silts up fast, so we arranged a tanker to empty it and a CCTV survey to check the run. The drains were flowing before we left, with a plan to keep them that way.

Sometimes that means moving into CCTV investigation to confirm the condition of the line. Sometimes it means progressing into repair work because the pipe itself is now part of the issue. In other cases, lining or root removal is the more suitable route.

Drainage Services in Southampton

Drainage work in Southampton can begin with an urgent blockage and then move into investigation, structural repair, no-dig reinstatement, surface water improvements, or planned maintenance once the condition of the line is clearer.

Drain Clearing & Unblocking

Blocked toilet, sink or yard gully in a Shirley or Portswood terrace? We rod and jet it clear, usually in one visit, then run the camera so the old clay isn’t setting you up for a repeat.

CCTV Drain Surveys

When a line keeps blocking it’s usually a moved clay joint or oval pitch-fibre, not the waste going down it. A camera tells us which. You get the footage, the fault marked, and the depth, handy too before you buy an older SO property.

Drain Repairs

A cracked salt-glazed joint or a split length of pitch-fibre won’t jet away, so we replace or reline the bad section and stop the repeat call-outs. Usually no-dig, which keeps a Freemantle front garden or a tight city-centre yard intact.

Drain Lining & Patching

For the worn clay under the Victorian terraces and the failing pitch-fibre out on the Millbrook and Thornhill estates, we cure a resin sleeve inside the existing pipe. No dig across the drive or garden. Where it’s a single cracked joint, a localised patch does it.

Root Removal

The mature street trees around St Denys and Portswood send roots straight into any open clay joint below them. We cut the roots out, find their way in on camera, then seal that joint so they don’t grow back through it.

Soakaway installations

On the low-lying, often clay-heavy ground near the waterfront, rainwater sits rather than drains. We dig a soakaway in better-draining substrata and size it to the runoff your roof and hardstanding actually shed.

Pre-Planned Drainage Maintenance

For the student HMOs around Portswood and the kitchens along the waterfront, fat and term-time loading block drains on a schedule of their own. Booked-in jetting and camera checks get ahead of it, so it’s planned for rather than a 2am call-out.

HOW IT WORKS

How Our Southampton Drainage Service Works

Four steps from first call to a drain that runs, whether it’s a quick blockage or a line that needs more work.

Tell us
what’s wrong

Call or message us with what you’re seeing, which drain or outlet, and whether it’s one property or a whole site.

We find
the cause

We come out and find the cause, jetting, rods or a CCTV camera down the line, so we are fixing the real fault, not guessing.

We quote
the fix

Then you get a straight answer and a price, whether that’s a jet-clear, a no-dig liner, cutting roots out, or replacing a section of pipe.

We clear or
repair the drain

We carry out the agreed work and re-check the run on camera where it matters, so it’s flowing properly and not back in a month.

What it costs, and how we price it

We don’t quote a blocked drain blind. We look at the job first, over the phone, on camera, or at the property, then give you a clear price before we lift a cover. You pay for the work that’s needed, with nothing bolted on.

The quote itself is free, and you are under no obligation to go ahead.

Guaranteed work

Our lining and repair work is backed by a 10-year guarantee. We are fully insured, and our engineers hold City & Guilds water-jetting tickets.

What you get when you call us

We find the cause, not just clear itOn the recurring Southampton call-outs, a jet only buys a fortnight. We camera the run so the fix lands on the cracked joint or the roots feeding in, not the symptom at the gully.
You get the price before we startYou hear the figure for the Southampton job before a cover is lifted, in writing, and nothing gets bolted onto the invoice that we did not agree first.
We actually know SouthamptonFrom the Victorian salt-glazed runs in Shirley and St Denys to the 1960s pitch-fibre out toward Thornhill, we have worked most of the SO pipe stock first-hand, and we know exactly where the private drain ends and Southern Water's sewer begins.

What causes most blocked drains in Southampton

The age of the housing tells us what is under the slab before we lift it. The Victorian terraces in Shirley, Freemantle, Portswood and St Denys still run on original salt-glazed clay; the post-war estates at Thornhill and Weston tend to be pitch-fibre that has gone oval. Clay loses its joints to root entry, pitch-fibre collapses on itself, and either way the same run keeps catching waste.

The 1950s to 70s rebuilds at Millbrook, Thornhill and Harefield were largely drained with pitch-fibre pipe, which is now past its life: it blisters, goes oval and collapses. Once a joint cracks, silt washes in and the blockage keeps coming back. We cover SO14 to SO19, run a CCTV survey first, and use no-dig repairs where we can. Southampton's public sewers belong to Southern Water; we will tell you whether a fault is on your private drain or their main before any work starts.

Southampton Drainage FAQs

Can you help with blocked drains in Southampton that keep coming back?
Yes. If the same drain is causing repeat trouble, the problem may sit deeper in the line rather than being a fresh blockage each time. In those situations, the next step is often CCTV inspection so the cause can be confirmed before more reactive work is carried out.
What should I do if wastewater is rising through a toilet or other low-level outlet?
Stop using connected fixtures until the drainage has been checked. Continued use can push more wastewater back into the property and make the disruption worse.
Do you work on drainage systems for flats, rentals, restaurants, and commercial premises in Southampton?
Yes. We carry out drainage work for houses, flats, rental properties, restaurants, offices, shops, warehouses, managed sites, and other commercial premises across Southampton.
When is CCTV more useful than another drain clearance visit?
CCTV survey work is often the better next step when the cause is unclear, the same section keeps failing, foul smells continue, or hidden defects are suspected below ground. It helps show whether the issue comes from build-up, root ingress, cracking, movement at joints, or another internal fault.
Can you deal with outside drains that keep overflowing around the property?
Yes. Repeated external overflows usually point to a deeper restriction, a damaged section, or another fault further along the run. We can inspect the line properly and advise whether it needs clearing, surveying, repairing, or another follow-on step.
Do you only unblock drains, or can you repair them as well?
We do more than blockage clearance. Alongside unblocking work, we also carry out drain repairs, lining and patching, root removal, soakaway work, and wider drainage installation or groundwork where needed.
Are no-dig repair options available for damaged drains in Southampton?
Yes, where the pipe condition allows it. Our no-dig lining and patching methods can restore suitable damaged sections without full excavation. If the defect is too severe for that approach, we will explain when a more involved repair is the better option.
Can you help with drains affected by roots?
Yes. We can carry out root removal, but long-term improvement usually depends on how the roots entered the system. In many cases, the affected section also needs lining or repair so the same problem is less likely to return.
Do you work on surface water drainage and soakaways in Southampton?
Yes. If runoff is not dispersing properly or water is collecting around the property, we can assess the issue and advise whether soakaway installation or replacement work is needed.
What areas do you cover around Southampton?
We cover Southampton, Shirley, Bitterne, Woolston, Portswood, Totton, Eastleigh, and surrounding Hampshire areas, with wider coverage across the county where needed.
How much does it cost to unblock a drain in Southampton?
There is no fixed price, it depends on the cause. A simple clearance and a collapsed pipe are not the same job, so we look first (phone, camera or on-site) and give you a fair, no-obligation quote.
Who is responsible for a blocked drain, me or Southern Water?
It depends where the blockage is. A drain inside your boundary serving only your property is yours. Once it crosses your boundary or is shared with neighbours, it is usually the water company's, which for Southampton is Southern Water (Ofwat sets out who owns which pipes).
What blocks drains in older Southampton homes?
In the Victorian terraces it is usually root ingress and joints that have moved in the old clay pipe. On the post-war estates it is ageing pitch-fibre pipe that is blistering or collapsing. A CCTV survey shows which.
Should I get a CCTV drain survey when buying a house in Southampton?
For an older or period property, yes. A pre-purchase survey shows up cracks, root damage and collapses before you commit, and can save you a large bill later.
