The blocked drains and faults we deal with in Salisbury
Most Salisbury call-outs start the same way: one drain backs up and needs clearing fast. The ones worth watching are the faults that keep returning, because on the city’s old pipework that usually points to something underground.
The faults we get called to most around Salisbury:
- root ingress at the open clay joints common in the Fisherton and Harnham terraces
- blistered or collapsed pitch-fibre on the Bishopdown and Bemerton Heath estates
- the same run blocking again after it was cleared, which means the fault is deeper
- gullies and outside channels pushing water back out
- toilets filling high or draining slowly
- shower, bath and sink wastes that stop coping
- a persistent drain smell from one stretch of the line
- drainage that only backs up when a rental, shop or restaurant is busy
If it keeps coming back or moves between outlets, the cause is usually further down the line, and clearing it once won’t hold. That’s when we put a camera down.
Speak to a Drainage EngineerA recent Salisbury job: a sinking driveway over a failed drain
A homeowner near the city centre noticed their block-paved driveway was starting to dip along the line of the drain. When we dug down, the old private run under the drive had failed and was washing the ground out from under the blocks.
We lifted the paving, took out the old pipe, and laid a new run with fresh inspection chambers at the junctions, routing it clear of the lawn and trees. We flow-tested it to building regs, backfilled with Type 1, and relaid the block paving so you would not know we had been. The dipping stopped and the drainage is sound.

Drainage Services in Salisbury
Some Salisbury jobs just need the blockage gone. Others need a survey, a repair, no-dig lining, soakaway work or planned maintenance once we’ve seen what’s wrong.
Drain Clearing & Unblocking
Blocked sink, toilet, gully or outside drain? We clear it in one visit with rods and a jet. On the old clay runs around Fisherton and Harnham we keep the jet pressure sensible, then check the line so it stays clear.

CCTV Drain Surveys
When a Salisbury drain keeps blocking, it is usually a moved clay joint or root ingress further down the line, not the bit you can see. Our camera finds where, and you get the footage plus a plain report. Worth it too before buying any of the city’s older terraced homes.

Drain Repairs
If the pipe itself has failed, clearing it again won’t hold. We repair the damaged section instead. On the Bishopdown and Bemerton Heath estates that often means a length of collapsed pitch-fibre, which we cut out and replace before it takes the rest of the run with it.

Drain Lining & Patching
Salisbury’s Victorian salt-glazed clay cracks at the joints, and the 1950s pitch-fibre out on the estates blisters and goes oval. Where the pipe can still take it, we line it from the inside with a resin sleeve. No digging up your drive or garden, and it lasts for decades.

Root Removal
The mature street trees along Salisbury’s older terraces push roots straight into any clay joint that has opened up. We cut them out, then camera the spot they got in. That joint nearly always needs lining afterwards, and we’ll tell you straight if it does.

Drain Installation / Groundwork
New drainage runs, connections and groundwork. Common on Salisbury’s tighter Fisherton and Harnham plots where an extension needs the existing run rerouted, or where a worn-out private system has to be rebuilt rather than patched. Laid to spec, flow-tested, and connected to the Wessex Water main where it has to be.

Soakaway Installations
Water pooling and not draining away? We design and build a soakaway sized to your ground. Salisbury sits low where the Avon and Nadder meet, so the water table is high in parts of Harnham and the riverside streets, and a soakaway has to be set and sized for that rather than dropped in to a standard depth.

Pre-Planned Drainage Maintenance
Scheduled jetting and inspections for landlords and managed sites. Handy for the city-centre shops, cafes and rental terraces around SP1 and SP2, where the drainage is old and a blockage at the wrong moment shuts you down. We keep it clear so you get fewer surprises.

What causes most blocked drains in Salisbury
Most blocked drains we see in Salisbury come down to the pipe, not the postcode. The Victorian terraces near the centre and the older houses around Fisherton and Harnham mostly still run on the original salt-glazed clay. The joints move as the ground shifts, tree roots find the gaps, and that is what keeps catching waste.
The mid-century estates toward Bishopdown and Bemerton Heath usually have 1950s to 70s pitch-fibre pipe. It is past its life and tends to blister and collapse, so once one section goes we often find more.

We survey before we dig, so we only replace pipe that actually needs it and fix the rest with no-dig lining. Salisbury’s public sewers belong to Wessex Water, and we tell you whether the fault is on your private drain or their main before we start. Ofwat sets out who is responsible for which pipes.
On the older clay runs we usually find the trouble at a joint that has moved or a junction where roots have pushed in. We dig down to that one spot, cut out the failed section, and fit new pipe or line it, rather than disturbing the whole run.
The photo shows a junction repair on an excavated clay drain, the same fault we deal with most often under Salisbury’s Victorian and pre-war streets.
