What we get called out to across Portsmouth and Portsea Island

On Portsea Island, the call that comes up most is the one that keeps coming back. A toilet backs up, gets rodded, then goes again a few weeks later, because a flat run with barely any fall silts up faster than a steeper drain elsewhere would.

The faults we are out on week to week:

  • the same Southsea or Fratton run silting up again after slack water settles in it
  • one shared rear-terrace line backing up several houses at once
  • foul water surfacing at the gully when the run cannot cope
  • roots into the open joints of the old salt-glazed clay
  • blistered or collapsing pitch-fibre on the post-war rebuilds near the dockyard
  • a drain smell that lingers indoors once a joint has dropped

We work all of it across houses, terraced flats, HMOs and rentals, plus the shops and units along Albert Road and Fratton. When a run keeps failing after earlier work, the cause is usually underground and a quick reactive clear just moves it along the line.

When a Portsmouth blockage turns out to be a worn pipe

On Portsea Island, a blockage that clears then comes straight back is rarely a one-off. With the high water table here, it usually points to a tired pipe underneath.

In Portsmouth, some of the more persistent call-outs come from lines that have already been cleared before, but the same section keeps causing disruption because the real cause was never confirmed. A defect underground may be holding waste back. Roots may have entered the run. A displaced joint or weakened section may be catching debris and turning a short-term improvement into a repeat fault.

We trace it back along the run before we quote. On the island that often means the shared rear-terrace line, not the gully you can see.

Where appropriate, the next stage may involve CCTV inspection to see what is happening inside the run, repair work where the line condition is failing, or lining or root removal where the system needs a more durable fix.

The point is to find the actual fault and fix it once, so you are not calling someone back out to the same Portsmouth drain next month.

Drainage Services in Portsmouth

A rodded gully and a collapsed clay run are not the same call-out. We clear the quick ones on the spot and camera the rest, then line, repair, root-cut or rebuild from there. One crew, start to finish.

Drain Clearing & Unblocking

Toilet, sink, shower or yard gully gone over? We rod and jet the run clear and check the flow holds before we pack up. On a shared terrace line we clear it for every door it feeds, not just yours.

CCTV Drain Surveys

When a PO drain keeps surcharging, or before you buy a Southsea terrace, we send a camera down the run. You see the open joint, the silted dip or the roots for yourself, and where it sits on the line.

Drain Repairs

A dropped clay joint or a cracked length sitting in slack water is what turns an island run into a monthly call-out. We dig down to the bad section, even on a tight terrace plot, and rebuild it so it stops catching waste. Repairs carry a 10-year guarantee.

Drain Lining & Patching

We cure a resin sleeve inside the old clay or the dockyard pitch-fibre, so the back yard and the pavement stay put. A short fault gets a patch; a longer run gets a full liner.

Root Removal

Street trees feed into the open joints of Portsmouth’s old clay. We strip the roots out, find the way in on camera, and line the joint so they stop growing back.

Soakaway installations

A high water table makes soakaways tricky on the island, so we test the ground first and size it for what it can actually take. Where a soakaway will not work, we find the right outfall instead.

Why Choose us

Why Portsmouth Customers Choose Anytime Drain Solutions

The drain that costs you twice is the one that gets rodded clear and left, when the real fault was a cracked joint or roots feeding in further down the run. We work the job past the first clear so it does not come straight back.

We cover urgent blockages, drains that keep failing, CCTV surveys, lining and repairs. Much of it is the dense terraced and rental housing across Southsea, Fratton and Eastney, where one shared run can back up several homes at once.

We put the camera down first and price off what the pipe actually needs. You pay to fix the cause, not to move it along the line.

HOW IT WORKS

How Our Portsmouth Drainage Service Works

It starts with what you can see at the property. From there it splits two ways: a run that just needs clearing, or a pipe that needs the camera and a proper fix.

Explain what
is going wrong

Tell us which outlet is playing up, what is backing up or spilling over, and whether it is new or a run that keeps going on you.

Assess the
run properly

We trace the run back to where it actually fails, by rod, by hand at the chamber, or with a CCTV survey when the fault is underground.

Recommend
the right fix

Once we know the cause, you get a straight answer: a clear, a liner, a patch, root work, or whether it sits on Southern Water’s main rather than your drain.

Complete
the agreed work

We do the agreed work, get the flow back, and run the camera through again so you can see the same section will not go on you next month.

What it costs, and how we price it

There is no flat rate for a blocked drain in Portsmouth, because clearing a gully and relining a collapsed run are not the same job. We look first, on the phone, on camera, or at the property, and price the work the drain actually needs.

You hear the figure before a cover lifts, and nothing lands on the invoice that we did not agree with you first.

The quote is free and there is no obligation to book.

Work that is guaranteed

Our no-dig lining and repair work carries a 10-year guarantee. We are fully insured for public liability, and our engineers hold City & Guilds water-jetting tickets.

You get the price before we startWe quote in writing before a drain cover comes up. The figure we agree is the figure you pay.
We know the island’s groundWe work the low-lying PO runs week in, week out: the old clay across Southsea and Fratton, the pitch-fibre near the dockyard, and where Southern Water takes over.

A recent Portsmouth job

A Southsea terrace off Albert Road called us after a ground-floor toilet kept backing up; it had been rodded clear twice already that year and gone again within weeks. Rather than rod it a third time, we put a camera down the shared run first. The survey found a displaced clay joint about four metres out, sitting in slack water where the fall runs out, catching waste and silting up after every clear.

The rest of the pipe was sound, so we lined the bad section rather than dig up the back yard, then ran the camera through again to confirm a clean bore. We quoted the lining in writing first, and told them up front whether the fault sat on their drain or Southern Water’s main. It has stayed clear since.

What causes most blocked drains in Portsmouth

portsmouth drainage: excavated drain pipe repair on a failed clay joint
Excavated repair on a failed clay joint, the most common cause of repeat blockages on Portsmouth’s older terraces.

Most of the blockages we clear in Portsmouth come down to the housing. Street after street of Victorian terraces in Southsea and Fratton still run on the original salt-glazed clay, and after a century the joints have moved and tree roots have found the gaps. Pack that many old pipes into a dense island city and the same runs back up again and again.

It does not help that Portsea Island is flat and low-lying, so drains here have very little fall to work with. Once a joint opens or a run sags, silt settles in the slack water and the drain keeps blocking however many times it is rodded.

We cover PO1 to PO6, survey before we commit, and line rather than dig where the pipe will take it. Portsmouth’s public sewers belong to Southern Water; we will tell you whether the fault is on your private drain or their main before any work starts (Ofwat sets out who owns which pipes).

Portsmouth Drainage FAQs

Do you provide emergency drain unblocking in Portsmouth?
Yes. We deal with urgent drainage problems in Portsmouth, including blocked drains, backed-up toilets, overflowing gullies, blocked outside lines, and other issues that need a fast response.
Can you help with drainage problems affecting flats, rentals, and busy commercial premises?
Yes. We work on drainage systems for homes, flats, rental properties, shops, restaurants, offices, managed sites, and other commercial premises across Portsmouth.
What should I do if wastewater is backing up inside the property?
Stop using connected fixtures until the drainage has been checked. Continued use can push more wastewater back through toilets, sinks, showers, or other low-level outlets and make the disruption worse.
When is CCTV the right next step for a drain in Portsmouth?
CCTV inspection is usually the right next step when the cause is unclear, the same section keeps blocking, smells persist, or hidden underground defects are suspected.
Do you deal with repeat blockages, not just one-off emergencies?
Yes. Some Portsmouth jobs need urgent attendance because the line is already backing up. Others involve a drain that keeps underperforming after earlier work and needs proper investigation as well as clearance.
Can you repair damaged drains as well as unblock them?
Yes. Alongside clearance work, we also carry out drain repairs, lining and patching, root removal, soakaway work, and wider drainage installation or groundwork.
Are no-dig drain repairs available in Portsmouth?
Yes, where the pipe condition allows it. Our no-dig lining and patching methods can restore suitable damaged sections without full excavation.
Can you help if an outside drain keeps overflowing near the property?
Yes. Repeated outside drain overflows often point to a deeper restriction, damage, or another fault further along the run. We can inspect the line properly and advise on the right next step.
Do you work on surface water drainage and soakaways in Portsmouth?
Yes. If rainwater is collecting around the property or the external drainage is no longer coping properly, we can assess the issue and advise whether soakaway work is needed.
What areas do you cover around Portsmouth?
We cover Portsmouth and the PO postcodes, including Southsea, Fratton, North End, Buckland, Copnor, Milton, Eastney, Cosham, Drayton and Farlington, plus nearby Hampshire areas.
How much does it cost to unblock a drain in Portsmouth?
There is no fixed price, it depends on the cause. A quick clearance and a collapsed pipe are not the same job, so we look first, by phone, camera or on-site, and give you a fair, no-obligation quote.
Who is responsible for a blocked drain, me or Southern Water?
It depends where the blockage is. A drain inside your boundary serving only your property is yours. Once it crosses your boundary or is shared with neighbours, it is usually the water company's, which for Portsmouth is Southern Water (Ofwat sets out who owns which pipes).
Why do drains block so often on Portsea Island?
Portsmouth is flat, low-lying and partly built on reclaimed marshland, so the water table is high and drains have little fall. When a joint opens or a run sags, groundwater and silt get in and the same drain keeps backing up. A CCTV survey shows what is happening before more work is done.
What blocks drains in older Portsmouth homes?
In the Victorian terraces across Southsea and Fratton it is usually root ingress and joints that have moved in the old clay pipe. In the post-war rebuilds near the dockyard it is ageing pitch-fibre pipe that is blistering or collapsing. A CCTV survey shows which.
Should I get a CCTV drain survey when buying a house in Portsmouth?
For an older or period property, yes. A pre-purchase survey shows up cracks, root damage and collapses before you commit, and can save you a large bill later.
