What drain installation and groundwork covers
Drain installation and groundwork means putting in new below-ground drainage and doing the digging, pipe laying and ground reinstatement that comes with it. We install foul and surface water systems for homeowners, builders, developers and commercial sites across Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire, from a single gully on an extension to a full site network.
A new extension, an outbuilding, a knocked-through kitchen or a self-build all need drainage that did not exist before. We design the run, set the right fall, lay the pipe in a properly bedded trench, connect it to the existing system or a new soakaway, and backfill and reinstate so the ground is left as it should be. If your old clay system has failed rather than just blocked, replacing a section is often the honest fix, and we will tell you when a drain repair will do instead.

New drainage usually comes up for one of these reasons:
- An extension, loft conversion or new kitchen or bathroom that needs its own waste run
- A new build or self-build that needs a full foul and surface water system from scratch
- An old clay or pitch-fibre system that has collapsed, sunk or keeps backing up beyond repair
- A new connection into the public sewer, a private treatment plant or a soakaway
- An outbuilding, annexe, garden room or commercial unit being plumbed in for the first time

How we install a new drain
Design and excavate, lay and connect, then reinstate and test, so the system is signed off and the ground is left tidy.
Step 1: Design and excavate
We work out the route, the fall and where the run connects, then set out and dig the trenches by hand or machine depending on access and ground.
Step 2: Lay and connect
We bed the pipe on the right granular base, lay it to a steady fall, fit junctions and an inspection chamber where needed, then make the connection into the sewer, treatment plant or soakaway.
Step 3: Reinstate and test
We test the run for flow and watertightness, surround and backfill the pipe, and reinstate the surface, whether that is soil, slabs, tarmac or concrete.
Building Regulations and Part H, the bit people miss
New below-ground drainage falls under Part H of the Building Regulations. That covers how the pipe is laid, the fall, the bedding, where it connects and how it is tested, and it is the part that gets a job failed at inspection if it is done by eye. We build to that standard from the start.

We keep foul waste and rainwater on their own runs where the system calls for it, rather than tipping everything into one pipe and overloading it.
Right fall, proper bedding
Too steep and the water runs away from the solids; too shallow and it sits and silts up. We set the gradient and surround the pipe so it does not settle or crack once the ground is backfilled.
Inspection access built in
We fit chambers and rodding points where they belong, so the run can be cleared and surveyed later without digging it back up.
If your project is being signed off by building control or a developer, we can supply the photos and test records they ask for. On commercial sites around Poole and Portsmouth we work to the programme the main contractor sets.

- How long the run is and how deep it has to go to hold the right fall.
- The ground we are digging through, soft soil, clay, rock or an existing slab all dig differently.
- How easy the site is to reach, whether a machine can get in or it has to be dug by hand.
- Where it connects, a straightforward sewer tie-in is quicker than a new soakaway or a treatment plant.
- What surface goes back on top, lawn, block paving, tarmac or concrete.

A drainage job is only finished when the surface is back and the site is tidy. The dug-up mess is the part people dread, so we plan the reinstatement before we start digging:
- Spoil is kept clear of the work and taken away rather than left piled in the garden.
- The pipe is surrounded and backfilled in layers and compacted, so the ground does not sink over the run later.
- Lawns are made good, and slabs, block paving or tarmac are relaid to match what was there.
- We leave you the chamber positions and a note of where the run sits, handy if you ever extend again.
