What drain clearing and unblocking covers

Drain clearing and unblocking means getting a blocked drain flowing again and working out why it blocked in the first place. We handle internal and external blockages for homeowners, landlords, letting agents and commercial premises across Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire. Most blockages we clear in a single visit.

Blocked toilet, slow sink, gurgling shower, a gully overflowing in the yard or a manhole backing up outside, we clear them all. If a drain keeps blocking, that usually points to something underneath, so we look for the cause rather than just shifting the surface. Where we find cracked pipework, root ingress or a collapsed section, we explain it and talk you through a CCTV drainage survey, root removal or a drain repair rather than leaving you to guess.

How to tell your drain is blocked

If you notice any of the following, there is a good chance your drains need professional attention:

  • Slow-draining sinks, showers, or toilets
  • Unpleasant smells coming from inside or outside drains
  • Gurgling sounds from pipework
  • Water pooling around gullies, covers, or garden drains
  • Wastewater backing up into internal fittings or outside drains

If these signs keep coming back, a quick plunge or a bottle of drain cleaner will not fix it. Something is restricting the flow and it needs finding. Call 0330 043 4305 and we will get a real answer.

How we clear a blocked drain

Three steps, every job: find the cause, clear the blockage, then check the drain runs properly before we leave.

Step 1: Identify the Cause

We assess the blockage and, where needed, inspect the drain using specialist CCTV equipment to locate the issue and check the condition of the pipework.

Step 2: Clear the Blockage

We pick the method that suits the job, usually high-pressure water jetting or electro-mechanical rods, to shift grease, silt, scale, roots and wipes without damaging sound pipework.

Step 3: Check Flow and Advise on Next Steps

Once the drain is clear, we recheck flow and explain what caused the problem. If there are signs of damage or recurring faults, we advise on any follow-up work that may be needed.

The methods we use to clear drains

High-pressure water jetting
A jet of water clears grease, silt, wipes and root fibres and scours the pipe wall, so the drain runs like it should rather than half-clearing and blocking again.

CCTV drain surveys
When a drain keeps blocking, we send a camera down to see why. It shows cracks, root ingress, displaced joints or a collapsed section on screen, so you are paying to fix the actual fault. See our CCTV drainage surveys.

Electro-mechanical cleaning
Rotary rods grind out hard scale and compacted deposits in smaller internal pipes where jetting is not the right call, common on kitchen wastes and older commercial runs.

Root cutting and descaling
Roots get into a drain through a cracked joint and keep growing back. We cut them out and clear the scale, then advise whether the joint needs sealing so they stay out. More on root removal.

Planned maintenance
If your drains block on a regular schedule, a planned clean once or twice a year is cheaper than the next emergency. We set this up for restaurants, HMOs and managed sites across Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire. See pre-planned drain maintenance.

What does it cost to clear a blocked drain?

Most blocked drains are straightforward, and we quote the job before we start so you approve the price first. What you pay comes down to a few things:

  • Where the blockage is, an indoor toilet or sink is quicker to reach than an underground run between manholes.
  • How we clear it, plunging and rods, high-pressure jetting, or electro-mechanical cleaning for hard scale.
  • How easy the drain is to get to, and whether the cover lifts cleanly.
  • Whether it is a one-off clear or a drain that keeps blocking and needs a camera survey to find the cause.

If the cause turns out to be a cracked or collapsed pipe, we show you on the camera and quote the repair separately, so nothing lands on the bill that you have not agreed to.

What to do while you wait for us

A blocked drain is rarely an emergency you have to fix yourself. A few simple things keep it from getting worse before we get there:

  1. Stop running water into the drain. The more water you add, the further it backs up. Hold off on washing, flushing and the dishwasher until we arrive.
  2. Skip the chemical drain cleaners. They rarely shift a real blockage, and they can splash back when we open the drain. Leave it for us.
  3. Lift the cover if it is safe. If you can lift the manhole cover without straining, it helps us see where the drain is backing up.
  4. Move anything valuable clear. Shift bins, boxes and anything that could be spoiled away from where water is pooling.
  5. Note when it started. Tell us when it began and whether it is getting worse, it helps us bring the right kit the first time.

Keeping the drain clear afterwards

Once it is flowing again we check the line runs properly and tell you why it blocked, so it is less likely to come back. A few habits keep most drains clear:

  • Only flush the three Ps, pee, paper and poo. Wipes, cloths and sanitary items snag even when the packet says flushable.
  • Keep fat, oil and food scraps out of the kitchen sink, let them cool and bin them instead.
  • Fit a guard over outside gullies to catch leaves and silt before they wash in.
  • If a drain keeps blocking, book a camera survey, a repeat blockage usually points to something underground that needs sorting once.

Drain Unblocking FAQs

How much does it cost to clear a blocked drain?
It depends on what is causing the blockage, where it is and how long it takes to reach. A simple sink or toilet blockage is usually a quick job; a blockage out in the main run can take longer. Rather than quote a number we cannot stand behind, we look at the job, then give you a free no-obligation quote before any work starts. The price you agree is the price you pay.
Do I pay anything if I just want a quote?
No. The quote is free and there is no obligation. You only pay once you have agreed the work and we have carried it out.
How soon can you get to me?
We answer the phone 24 hours a day and aim to get to urgent blockages the same day wherever we can. We will give you a realistic time when you call rather than a promise we cannot keep, and if anything changes you hear it from us first.
Are you available 24/7?
Yes. We respond to urgent blocked drains day and night, including weekends and bank holidays.
What methods do you use to clear blocked drains?
We use high-pressure water jetting and electro-mechanical cleaning, depending on the type and location of the blockage. If the cause is not clear or the problem keeps returning, we can also carry out a CCTV drain survey.
Will you need to dig up my garden or driveway?
Not for standard drain unblocking. Digging is only usually needed if a CCTV inspection confirms a broken, collapsed, or displaced pipe that requires repair.
The drain keeps blocking. Can you find the cause?
Yes. If the blockage is recurring, we can identify the cause using CCTV equipment. Common problems include root ingress, grease build-up, scale, poor fall, or damaged joints. We explain what we find and advise on the right next step.
Who is responsible for a blocked drain, me or the water company?
As a rule, you are responsible for the drains inside your property boundary, and the water company looks after the public sewer beyond it, including most shared lateral drains. If a blockage sits on a shared run, the water company may clear it at no cost to you. If we find it does, we will tell you so you are not paying for work that is not yours. You can check the boundary on the Ofwat guidance.
Why do older homes block more often?
A lot of properties across Dorset and Hampshire still run on clay pipes with mortared joints. As the ground shifts those joints open slightly, roots find the gap, and grease and silt catch on the rough edges. That is why a drain that has always been fine suddenly starts blocking every few months. A CCTV survey shows whether it is a one-off or a joint that needs sealing or relining.
The drain is flowing again, so why bother finding the cause?
Because a drain that blocks once usually blocks again. Clearing it gets you running today; finding why it blocked stops you paying for the same call-out in three months. If it is roots or a cracked joint, that only gets worse left alone.
Do you work for both homes and businesses?
Yes. We provide drain unblocking for domestic and commercial properties, including homes, rental properties, shops, offices, restaurants, and other business premises.
What areas do you cover?
We cover Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire, including Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, Weymouth, Dorchester, Southampton, Totton, Portsmouth, Havant, Waterlooville, Lymington, Salisbury, Warminster and Chippenham. If you are nearby and not on that list, call and ask.
